Caring for Your Health Naturally With Aromatherapy

Personalised care, using therapies most appropriate to your individual needs.

Aromatherapy is a natural, holistic therapy that uses concentrated essential oils extracted from plants to support health and wellbeing. While it is often associated with massage, essential oils can be used in many different ways to complement everyday life.

In my practice, aromatherapy is most often incorporated alongside Reflexology and Acupuncture. I create personalised essential oil blends to use between appointments, helping to support your wellbeing, encourage self-care and extend your treatment beyond the clinic.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the use of pure essential oils extracted from aromatic plants, including their flowers, leaves, fruits, seeds, bark and roots. Each essential oil has its own distinctive aroma and traditional properties, allowing it to be selected according to an individual's needs and preferences. Used thoughtfully, aromatherapy offers a gentle, natural way to support physical, mental and emotional wellbeing and encourage balance as part of a holistic approach to health.

Did you know

Your sense of smell is the only one of your senses directly connected to areas of the brain involved in emotion and memory, known as the limbic system. This is why a familiar aroma can instantly remind you of a person, place or special occasion. Aromatherapy makes use of this unique connection, with carefully selected essential oils helping to create a sense of calm, relaxation and emotional wellbeing.

Essential Oils and Carrier Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated aromatic extracts obtained from plants. Despite their name, they are not oily or greasy like vegetable oils, but are complex natural substances containing many different plant constituents that contribute to their distinctive aroma and traditional properties.

Because essential oils are so concentrated, they are usually diluted in a carrier (base) oil before being applied to the skin. Carrier oils are cold-pressed vegetable oils, such as grapeseed or sweet almond oil, which help the essential oils spread evenly while nourishing the skin. Other carrier oils may be selected depending on the individual's skin type or the purpose of the blend.

How I Use Aromatherapy in clinic on a daily basis

Every treatment begins with a detailed consultation, including your medical history and any medication you may be taking. This helps me identify any cautions or contraindications and ensures that any essential oils selected are suitable for you. We then explore your individual needs, lifestyle and how you would like aromatherapy to support your wellbeing. From this, I create a personalised essential oil blend tailored specifically for you, together with practical ways to incorporate it into your everyday life.

Your personalised essential oil blend may be prepared for use in a diffuser, added to a bath or footbath, blended into a pulse-point oil, or mixed with an unscented body lotion to use after a shower. The aim is to make aromatherapy simple, practical and easy to incorporate into your daily routine between appointments.

Rather than relying on a single essential oil, I usually create a personalised blend. Carefully selected oils that work together in what aromatherapists refer to as synergy, where the effect of the whole is greater than the sum of its individual parts, this combined blend offers a broader aroma and a more balanced profile. Just as importantly, your blend should be one you genuinely enjoy using, as no two personalised essential oil blends are ever exactly the same.

How Aromatherapy May Support Your Well-being

People choose aromatherapy for many different reasons. Some enjoy it as part of a regular self-care routine, while others use carefully selected essential oils to help create a calm, restful or more focused environment at home or work. Depending on your individual needs, aromatherapy may be used to support:

  • Relaxation and stress management

  • Emotional wellbeing

  • A calming bedtime routine and restful sleep

  • Focus and mental clarity

  • Creating a peaceful atmosphere at home or in the workplace

  • Mindfulness and self-care

Every blend is selected according to your individual needs, preferences and intended use.

Why Essential Oil Quality Matters

Not all essential oils are created equal. Although many are labelled "100% pure", this alone does not guarantee a high-quality essential oil. The quality of an oil is influenced by many factors, including the botanical species of the plant, where and how it was grown, the time of harvest, the method of extraction and how the oil is stored.

When choosing an essential oil, look for the botanical (Latin) name, the country of origin and a reputable supplier that provides clear information about the oil. High-quality essential oils are also typically supplied in dark glass bottles to help protect them from light and preserve their quality.

Choosing good-quality essential oils allows you to experience the plant's true aroma and traditional qualities, helping you get the very best from your aromatherapy experience. This is why I use carefully selected, high-quality essential oils from trusted professional suppliers when creating personalised blends for my clients.WhyWhyBig Ideas, Real Impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have aromatherapy without a massage?

Absolutely. While aromatherapy is often associated with massage, essential oils can be enjoyed in many other ways. In my practice, I most often prepare personalised blends for home use, allowing you to continue supporting your wellbeing between appointments.

Depending on your individual needs, your blend may be used in a diffuser, added to a bath or footbath, applied as a pulse-point oil or blended into an unscented body lotion. Where appropriate, I may also recommend steam inhalation for short-term support with head or sinus congestion. During your consultation, I will explain the safest and most effective way to use your personalised blend at home.

Can essential oils help promote restful sleep?

Many people enjoy using aromatherapy as part of their bedtime routine to help them unwind at the end of the day. A personalised essential oil blend can be used in a diffuser or other recommended way for around 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime, helping to create a calm and relaxing environment.

Used consistently, the aroma can become part of a familiar bedtime routine, with your brain beginning to associate that scent with preparing for sleep. As with all personalised blends, the essential oils selected will depend on your individual needs and preferences.

Can I choose the oils used for my treatment?

Yes. Creating your personalised essential oil blend is very much a collaborative process. During your consultation, I will recommend a selection of essential oils based on your individual needs and the properties of the oils, while also taking your personal preferences into account.

An essential oil that you may not enjoy on its own can often smell completely different when blended with other oils. This is one of the reasons I encourage clients to experience the finished blend rather than judging a single oil in isolation. If there is an aroma you genuinely don't like, we can usually choose a suitable alternative while still creating a balanced blend that meets your needs.

I always aim to create a blend with a balanced, pleasant aroma, making it something you'll enjoy using every day.

Can aromatherapy help with anxiety?

Many people find aromatherapy a helpful addition to their self-care routine during times of stress or anxiety. While it is not a replacement for appropriate medical or psychological care, growing research suggests that certain essential oils, particularly when inhaled, may help reduce short-term feelings of anxiety and promote relaxation in some people.

In my practice, I often create a personalised essential oil blend that is selected according to your individual needs for home use and is often used alongside treatments such as Reflexology or Acupuncture, allowing the support of aromatherapy to continue between appointments.

Are essential oils safe?

Essential oils are natural, but they are also highly concentrated and should always be used with care. They are rarely applied directly to the skin without appropriate dilution, and some oils are not suitable during pregnancy, for young children or for people with certain medical conditions, allergies or medications. Some essential oils can also increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight.

This is why every personalised blend begins with a detailed consultation, allowing me to select essential oils that are both safe and appropriate for your individual needs. If you are ever unsure about using an essential oil, it is always best to seek professional advice before using it.

Can I use essential oils every day?

Yes.  Personalised aromatherapy essential oil blends are intended to be used regularly as part of your daily self-care routine. During your consultation, I'll explain the most appropriate way to use your blend and how often to apply it, as this will depend on the essential oils selected and the purpose of the blend.

When stored correctly in a cool place away from direct sunlight, a blend will usually remain suitable for use for several months. However, because every blend is created for your individual needs at that particular time, I generally recommend replacing it after around six months, even if some remains. In practice, most clients use their blend well before then and, if their needs have changed, a new personalised blend can be created to reflect their current situation.

What the research says

Research into Aromatherapy and essential oils continues to grow. While more high-quality studies are needed in some areas, current evidence suggests that aromatherapy may help relaxation, reduce short-term feelings of anxiety and improve sleep quality for some people when used appropriately as part of a wider approach to well-being.

As with all complementary therapies, aromatherapy should be viewed as supporting your overall health and well being rather than replacing conventional medical care. this balanced approach reflects the way aromatherapy is used in my practice, combining traditional knowledge with the awareness of current research.
